Each new year presents the opportunity to sharpen your pencil and restore your eraser and turn to a fresh, new page in your life’s story. Despite the challenges of 2020, there should always be something that you learned about yourself that will help you write the remaining pages of your life.
Last year presented me with many new opportunities. I was able to publish my first two books, The Hand Hug, and The Beauty Underneath the Struggle: Creating Your BUS Story, and I’ve been able to share the power of positivity with others.
Even in times of great struggle, life always presents new opportunities, and it’s up to us to have the courage to reach out and grab them. Tony Robbins said, “Your life changes the moment you make a new, congruent, and committed decision.” What changes will you make in your life this year? How will you continue to evolve as you morph into the best version of yourself?
Commit to making 2021 the year you take 100% responsibility for your life and your story.
Each day we wake up we begin building a roadmap for our journey based on our choices. Many of us repeat the same routines such as going to work, coming home, watching television and going to bed, never realizing that these are all choices. When we accept the fact that we make these choices, we stop blaming outside forces for not being able to do the things we have longed to do, and we can then take the steps necessary to create new habits... A new you!
When I served as a curriculum coordinator for an elementary school in North Carolina, my principal would end every day’s morning announcement with these words. “Make it a great day or not. The choice is yours.” At the time, the phrase made no sense to me. “The choice is yours?” I thought. “How could we determine if the day was going to be good or bad?” Well, because we are the ones who assign meaning to what is going on in our life, we can either label it as good or bad.
When we accept that we have control over how we respond to the things in our lives, we stop believing that everything is happening to us and realize that our response can completely change the outcome.
Make it a great year! That’s a choice you make.
As you reach the end of this well-deserved break and return to your work and school, my hope is that you feel refreshed and rejuvenated for the chapter ahead. Remember to make the daily choice to have a good day. Carry with you a positive mindset, and you can handle any struggle that life throws your way.
Let’s make it a great year or not. The choice is yours!
