If you ask 100 people to define leadership, you will probably get several different responses. Over the years my definition of leadership has changed. Like many of you, I use to have a canned idea that leadership was limited to a title or a position. Since diving into culture and understanding how to create positive organizations, I now understand the power of self-leadership. We have all been impacted by the different leaders in our lives – our parents, pastors, grandparents, and our bosses, but the most powerful form of leadership is learning to lead ourselves.
Leading yourself means that you are aware of your own strengths and opportunities. It means that you are able to take 100% responsibility for your life and that you, and only you, are the one who assigns meaning to the things happening around in our world. You create your reality.
As I travel the country and talk to leaders and educators, I realize the need to understand the most powerful form of leadership is self- leadership. So often, we feel that someone else or something else is leading our lives and when this happens, we can become depressed, overwhelmed, or believe that we have no control over our lives.
In the book, The Beauty Underneath the Struggle ~Creating Your B.U.S. Story, I introduce the reader to 8 BE’s which will support them in becoming the leader of their lives. Knowing that no one else can create your life UNLESS you give them permission to do so is EMPOWERING. When assessing your SELF Leadership, ask yourself the following questions as it relates to the 8 BE’s framework from my book, The Beauty Underneath the Struggle:
Principle #1. BE Responsible
Am I taking 100% responsibility for everything that has happened in my life?
Am I constantly blaming others or events?
Am I taking responsibility for my thoughts, attitude, behavior, and results?
Principle #2. BE Aware
Am I aware of my strengths and opportunities?
Am I aware of my personal energy and how I show up each day?
Am I aware of how my energy impacts others?
Principle #3. BE Open
Do I listen, first to understand?
Am I receptive to people or ideas that are different than my own?
Principle #4: BE Courageous
Do I take the risk necessary to help me reach my goals?
Do I engage in difficult conversations with family members, supervisors, or friends?
Am I vulnerable and open to the areas in which I need help? Do I ask for support?
Principle #5. BE Grateful
Do I spend most of my time focusing on the good things happening in my life?
Do I recognize people (or events) that bring me joy?
Principle #6. BELIEVE
Have I taken a personally assessment of my beliefs and how these beliefs impact me? Others?
Are my current beliefs serving me well in this moment?
Principle #7. BE Awesome
Do you share your gifts and talents with others? How do you do that?
Principle #8. BE YOU
Are you being your authentic self?
Remember – there is no other person on this earth like you! Show up and Show out!
When embrace self-leadership, we understand that we are the creators of our life and we are ready to design our masterpiece!
